Lubrication is the supply of oil between two surfaces that have relative movement.
When applying lubrication to engine parts, one should choose a good lubricant to make the engine run efficiently.

The objective of applying lubrication to engine parts are:
- Reduce the frictional forces between the parts by having a relative motion by minimizing the force of friction and ensuring the engine's smooth running.
 - To reduce the wear and tear of moving parts.
 - To cool the surfaces by carrying away the heat generated due to friction.
 - Seal a space adjoining the surfaces, such as piston rings and cylinder liners.
 - To absorb the shocks between bearings and other parts and reduce noise.
 - To act as a cleaning agent and remove dirt, grit and any deposits that might be present between the moving parts of an automobile.
 - To help the piston rings seal the gases inside the piston cylinder.

- Main crankshaft bearings.
 - Big end bearings or crank pins.
 - Gudgeon in bearings.
 - Piston rings and cylindrical walls.
 - Timing gears.
